My mission is to empower individuals to reach their full potential by confronting and overcoming trauma.
Hi, I’m Malaika A. Small, a Licensed Master Social Worker. I am and have always been passionate about education, social justice, community engagement, supporting women of color, and helping people reach their full potential. I am highly skilled in coaching, advising and counseling BIPOC to overcome challenges regarding their career, life transitions, family issues, workplace microaggressions, interpersonal relationships, and healing from generational trauma.
As an African American mental health professional, I understand the harmful impact of systemic racism and its relationship to mental health, and I make a continuous effort to advocate for equitable resources in addressing it. Sometimes, people need to talk through day-to-day challenges, and my goal is to create a safe-space for people to do so. I am committed to normalizing meaningful conversations about mental health.

I earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Communications and Master of Science in Educational Administration from SUNY Albany. I have gained extensive management experience that spans from higher education to non-profit. Though I am profoundly proud and appreciative of the work that I have done and the experience gained. I wanted to explore, learn and do more, which lead to my second Masters.
I graduated from Silberman School of Social Work with a Master of Social Work. With socio-emotional learning and mental health being so critical at this moment, I want my life’s work to continue in the healing of my community and dedicate myself to doing transformational work to provide support and assistance to those who are suffering.
I am also a proud member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., Bronx Alumnae Chapter where I co-chair the Social Action Committee. A few random fun facts about me are that I love all things fashion, freelance as a makeup artist, enjoy all aspects of event planning and baking, have a laugh that is infectious, and was a cheerleader for the basketball team in high school.
My approach is holistic and centers the whole person. I have an unwavering love for the overall mental well-being of humanity. I pride myself on being easy to talk to, sensitive, in tune with the needs of others, spiritual but, not overly religious, gentle and patient. Though, I am a firm believer that God can do all things! I also believe that God created therapists and mental health practitioners as an extra layer of support.
I also enjoy facilitating and leading healing circles. I am certified in leading Restorative Justice and Sawubona Circles. Restorative justice is an approach that seeks to repair harm and allows space for individuals who inflict harm on their community to be accountable. I believe it should be commonplace within our communities.
