I specialize in providing culturally sensitive and trauma-focused care, aiding individuals in shedding societal expectations and embracing their authentic selves.
Hello there! I’m Victoria Mao, a Licensed Professional Counselor Associate.
Growing up as a Chinese American adoptee raised by a multicultural family in suburban Fairfield, I often found myself torn between two worlds. Trying to find my place in a predominantly white space while grappling with my cultural identity was challenging. I felt the pressure of being the perfect blend of my two backgrounds, which led to a struggle with anxiety and perfectionism.
Life sometimes has a way of changing our course unexpectedly. During my senior year in college, a significant medical event led to an abrupt pause in my academic journey. Although this period was marked by uncertainty, it was also a time of profound transformation.
Therapy turned into my haven, a place where my vulnerability became a strength, and every emotion translated into a step towards self- understanding. Therapy led to my healing and transformed my mindset. This journey of self-discovery led me to choose a new career path—mental health counseling.

My academic journey started at Hamilton College where I completed my Bachelor of Arts in Environmental Studies, with a minor in Mandarin. After working as a Program Coordinator for a Massachusetts health plan, I decided to take a leap of faith and pursue my passion for mental health.
I graduated with a Master of Arts in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Northwestern University in June 2023 and completed my year-and-a-half practicum and internship at PMA Mental Health Counseling, a private practice based in New York City.
During my time at PMA Mental Health Counseling, I had the opportunity to work with a diverse population of adult clientele and help them to navigate a variety of mental health issues, including anxiety, depression, and life transitions, as well as more complex challenges like major family issues, relationship issues, and identity development.
As a therapist, my aim is to foster a warm, empathetic environment that encourages openness and curiosity. I am deeply passionate about guiding individuals on their journey of self-discovery, embracing their unique cultural identities, navigating life transitions, and nurturing their emotional well-being.
My therapeutic approach is holistic, integrating elements from Psychodynamic Therapy, Gestalt Therapy, and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. By customizing these techniques to each individual’s unique needs, we delve into past experiences to gain a better understanding of the present, fostering healthier interactions with oneself and others.
I am particularly devoted to offering culturally sensitive and trauma-focused care, especially for individuals of color grappling with racial trauma and microaggressions. Through therapy, I hope to assist you in shedding societal expectations and living your truth. Together, we can empower you to embrace your authenticity with confidence.
