BIPOC THERAPY

A Safe Space for People of Color to Heal

Do you identify as Black, Indigenous, or a Person of Color (BIPOC)? Have you experienced burnout, stress, and difficulties at work or in your relationships? Are you ready to find a safe space to heal with a therapist that can relate to and validate your experience? Perhaps you are struggling with symptoms of anxiety, depression, and racial trauma. You may be internalizing the stress of everyday demands at work and at home, compromising your sense of balance. It could be that your familial relationships are strained because you’re having trouble regulating your emotions, communicating your feelings, or finding time and space for yourself to just breathe.

There is a name for Strong Black Man/Strong Black Woman Syndrome for a reason, as those in the black community (and other communities of color) are expected to remain unfazed by adversity. Due to this unspoken standard, people of color may not seek the help they need or feel discouraged from seeking therapy due to culturally imposed stigmas. And men of color in particular, may avoid discussing their feelings because they don’t feel safe enough to be vulnerable in a society that demands toughness and resilience.

In our society, communities of color are more likely to develop symptoms of depression and anxiety—such as hypervigilance, increased heart rate and blood pressure—as well as symptoms of PTSD related to racial trauma. Researchers have designated these occurrences as stemming from “racial battle fatigue,” identifying links between experiencing racism and chronic mental and physical health issues. When the weight of these circumstances accumulates, you can become increasingly vulnerable to self-judgment, critique, and shame.

Yet there is a place for you to feel heard and understood—and it’s here at Healing Springs Wellness Center, where we specialize in therapy for people of color.

FACTS & FIGURES

Communities of Color Experience Disproportionate Mental Health Challenges

We could devote a whole page to statistics that demonstrate the staggering mental health issues affecting communities of color in particular. Take, for example, the fact that suicide is the third leading cause of death for black men ages 15 to 24 or that over 10 million Latinx/Hispanic individuals—more than the number of people who live in New York City—reported as having developed a mental illness in the last decade or recent news indicating a sharp rise in anti-Asian sentiment since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic.

While systemic problems exist, there is also a need in communities of color to break generational traumas, continue cultural traditions, and heal the family unit. We know, however, that there are both external and internal barriers getting in the way of people of color from seeking the therapy or clinical intervention they need to heal.

Our team of culturally competent therapists at Healing Springs Wellness Center are specially trained in culturally-informed techniques so that BIPOC individuals can feel safe, seen, and respected.

OUR APPROACH

Therapy Can Heal Emotional Wounds And Re-Instill A Sense Of Hope

We at Healing Springs Wellness Center look beyond your symptoms to get to the root of your pain. Furthermore, we recognize many of the stressors and challenges that BIPOC clients face. Many of our clinicians are themselves therapists of color and all of us practice trauma-informed care with ongoing training in providing therapy and mental healthcare to people of color.

One of our many goals is to provide real-life solutions to real-life problems, no matter how big or small. And we are committed to offering compassionate, transparent, person-centered care by developing a therapeutic plan that is customized to meet your needs. After a brief intake and consultation, you will be matched with one of our team members based on which approach, specialization, and spiritual/cultural focus will best serve you.

Your Healing Springs clinician will get to know you through a holistic lens and establish a treatment plan according to a thorough understanding of what you’re experiencing emotionally, physically, and mentally. Beyond the various therapeutic frameworks that will be used in session, elements of mindfulness and meditation will be incorporated so that you can effectively shift your mindset in order to be more optimistic and resilient.

In addition, based on your strengths and the spiritual or cultural variables that provide you with a sense of joy and fulfillment, you will be given strategies for coping, managing stress, and regulating emotions that you’ll be able to use outside of session. You will also learn valuable communication skills that will help you assert your needs, create boundaries, and advocate for yourself in a way that leaves you feeling empowered rather than drained or anxious.

In therapy, your experience will be not only validated but also valued as you develop a vocabulary around your needs and learn how to vocalize them. Getting support from a culturally competent therapist who understands your experience will help you feel safe and comfortable enough with becoming vulnerable and emotionally aware.

Your life’s challenges can be navigated with confidence, and therapy for people of color at Healing Springs Wellness Center is here to set you on the path towards peace and self-acceptance.
